President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Sunday (October 15, 2023) raised the country’s flag in the city of Khankendi (Stepanakerte, the former capital of the former self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh).
In addition, Aliyev raised Azerbaijani flags in Khojaly, Agder and other settlements of Karabakh, which returned to Baku’s control after the September 19 military operation in the region. Thus, Azerbaijan demonstrated the restoration of full sovereignty over Karabakh.
According to international law, Karabakh is considered a part of Azerbaijan. Since the beginning of the 1990s, Baku has not controlled most of the territory, the “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic” was proclaimed there, not recognized by any country in the world. On September 19, as a result of a one-day military operation, Azerbaijan forced the government of the unrecognized republic to capitulate.
