Night of Predestination: Laylat-ul-Qadr

The first half of the holy month of Ramazan has passed. What wonderful things await us in the second half of it? Undoubtedly, first of all – the Night of Predestination (Laylat-ul-Qadr). According to traditions, the Qur’an was sent to the Messenger of Allah (s) on one of these nights.

Sources differ on the exact date, but it is believed to be one of the odd nights of the second half of Ramazan, most likely on the 19th, 21st, or 23rd, so these nights are celebrated especially solemnly, accompanied by night prayer vigils in mosques.

Also, it is believed that on the Night of Predestination (al-Qadr), the angels who descend at the behest of Almighty Allah dictate the fate of every believer for the next lunar year, until the next Night of Predestination.

In the name of Allah, the Gracious and the Merciful
1. Verily We sent him on the night of Predestination.
2. How do you know what the night of Doom is?
3. The Night of Predestination is better than a thousand months.
4. On this (night) angels and spirits descend with the permission of their Lord to perform all kinds of work.
5. Peace! Until the dawn itself. (Surah “Al-Ghadr” – Destiny)

About spending the nights of Ahya (wakefulness) in connection with the night of the Predestination:

The first night of Ahya is the night from the 18th to the 19th of the month of Ramazan;

The second night of Ahya is the night from the 20th to the 21st of the month of Ramazan; 1

The third night of Ahya is the night from the 22nd to the 23rd of the month of Ramazan.

It is recommended to keep ahya (stay awake), if possible, all nights of the month of Ramadan. But, if this is not possible, then it is recommended to keep ahya from the 18th to the 19th of Ramazan until the end of the month. And if this is also connected with certain difficulties, then it is best to keep ahya in the above mentioned 3 nights of the merciful month of Ramazan.

The night of al-Qadr is one of the most important programs of the month of Ramazan. The night of al-Qadr is a night that exceeds 1000 months. This night which is said to be more than 1000 months of Jihad 1000 months of rule. This merciful night, in which the abundance of people, their time of death and other issues related to existence is determined. This is the night in which the Holy Qur’an was sent down. The Koran itself tells about the greatness of this night.

In the hadiths related to Ahl al-Bayt (a), it is stated: “Angels descend to the Earth on the night of al-Qadr and they disperse throughout the world; they attend meetings of the faithful; greet them with “Salam” om and pronounce “Amen!” prayers, brought by the faithful, and this continues until dawn.” And it is also reported: “Doesn’t Allah refuse anyone to accept the prayer, except for those who rebelled against their parents, who cut ties with relatives, who drink alcoholic beverages, and those of the righteous who harbor in their souls hostile feelings for in relation to another believer.”

According to the Qur’an and the hadith of the Prophet (s) and his Ahl ul-Bayt (a), worshiping on one night of predestination is better than worshiping for a thousand months. On this night, affairs for the coming year are decided, angels descend on earth, and mercy and forgiveness are distributed.

Every believer must sleep on this night and spend it in prayers and worship. Everything he asks for this night will be fulfilled.

The Messenger of Allah (s) said: “The Almighty will forgive the sins of the one who, for the sake of faith and attaining His mercy, spends the night of predestination in worship.”

Imam Sadiq (a) said: “The heart of the blessed month of Ramadan is the night of predestination.”

According to the hadith of the Prophet (pbuh), the night of predestination falls on one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan. Ahl ul-Bayt (a) reported that the most likely time for this blessed night to occur is on the 19th, 21st or 23rd of Ramadan. That is, for at least these three nights, believers must watch and pray.

One of the unique properties of this night is that it can completely change a person’s psychology and his attitude to life, illuminate him with the light of the Most High.

Angel Gabriel (a), addressing the Prophet (s), said: “O Muhammad! The night of predestination is the night in which every worshiper will be answered and the repentance of every sinner will be accepted.”

Now let’s talk about the program according to which the believer should spend this night. First, it is desirable to perform ghusli (full ablution). According to the narrations from the Prophet (s) and his Family (a), on the night of predestination one should recite the Dua Jawshan Kabir (Great Armor), which contains 1000 names of Allah. After reading Jaushan Kabir, one should do the following:

Take the Qur’an and open it before your face so that Allah may fill your face with its light in this world and the next.

Then take the Qur’an in your right hand in front of your face, raise your left hand to the sky and say:

“Bismillahi-r-Rahman-r-Rahim. Alakhumma inni asaluka bi kitabikal munzal wa maa Fihi wa fihi ismukal akbar wa asmaukal husni wa ma yuhafu wa yurja an tajaalani min utakaaika mina nar»

(In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Merciful! O Allah, I ask You in the name of this revealed Book and what is in it, and Your greatest name, and Your best names, and that which is to be feared, and what is worth hoping for, save me from the fire).

Kiss the Qur’an, place it on your head and say: “Bismillahi-r-Rahman-r-Rahim Allahumma bi hakki khazal Guran wa bi hakki man arsaltahu bih wa bi hakki Kulla muminin madahtahu fih wa bi hakkika alayhim fala ahada aaraf bi hakkika mink”

(IN

the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Merciful! O Allah, in the name of this Qur’an and of him with whom You sent it, and of all the believers, praise in this book, and Your obligation that is upon them. And there is no one who knows the Truth better than You).

Now separate yourself from the surrounding reality, turn only to Allah and say: Bikya ya Allahu (for Your sake, O Allah) – 10 times; Bi Muhammadin (for the sake of Muhammad) – 10 times; Bi Aliyin (for the sake of Ali) – 10 times; Bi Fatimat (for the sake of Fatima) – 10 times; Beat Hasani (for Hasan’s sake) – 10 times; Bil Huseini (for the sake of Huseyn) – 10 times; Bi Ali ibn Hussein (for the sake of Ali ibn Hussein) – 10 times; Bi Muhammad ibn Ali (for the sake of Muhammad ibn Ali) – 10 times; Bi Jaafar ibn Muhammad (for the sake of Jaafar ibn Muhammad) – 10 times; Bi Musa ibn Jaafar (for the sake of Musa ibn Jaafar) – 10 times; Bi Ali ibn Musa (for the sake of Ali ibn Musa) – 10 times; Bi Muhammad ibn Ali (for the sake of Muhammad ibn Ali) – 10 times; Bi Ali ibn Muhammad (for the sake of Ali ibn Muhammad) – 10 times; Bi Hassan ibn Ali (for the sake of Hassan ibn Ali) – 10 times; Bil Hujjati (for the sake of Hujjat – Imam Mahdi) – 10 times.
