“Be Childlike with Your Children”
June 1 is celebrated around the world as the International Children’s Day. This day is dedicated to children—one of humanity’s greatest blessings—and to the protection of their rights, welfare, and legitimate interests.
Unfortunately, children often become the victims of adults’ mistakes, and in many cases, they are the ones who pay the highest price for them. Wars, poverty, violence, illiteracy, and neglect affect children’s lives before anyone else and leave lasting consequences on their future.
Islam likewise places great emphasis on the rights and well-being of children and addressed this issue centuries ago. Islamic teachings contain extensive guidance on child upbringing, proper education, moral and spiritual development, and the protection of children’s rights and dignity. It is therefore no coincidence that the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) stated as early as the seventh century: “Be childlike with your children.”
This brief yet profound saying highlights the importance of love, communication, and mutual understanding between parents and their children. In fact, this advice remains just as relevant today and continues to serve as one of the fundamental principles in matters concerning children. A child’s healthy, happy, and well-rounded development is built upon the love, attention, and understanding they receive from those around them.
