The Day of Mubahala
24th of Dhu al-Hijjah is the Day of Mubahala, one of the most significant events in Islamic history. In the 10th year after the Hijrah, a delegation of Christians from Najran came to Medina to engage in a theological discussion with the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, regarding the nature of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). Following these discussions, verse 61 of Surah Al Imran was revealed, inviting both parties to perform Mubahala — a solemn supplication asking God to invoke His curse upon the party that was false.
According to historical accounts, the Prophet (pbuh) came to the appointed gathering accompanied only by his closest family members: Ali ibn Abi Talib, Fatimah al-Zahra, Hasan ibn Ali, and Husayn ibn Ali. Witnessing their spiritual stature and sincerity, the Najran delegation chose not to proceed with the Mubahala and instead opted for a peaceful settlement.
The event of Mubahala occupies a distinguished place in Islamic tradition and is widely regarded as a profound testimony to the exalted status of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). Muslims commemorate this day through prayer, Qur’anic recitation, and reflection upon the spiritual legacy of the Prophet’s family.
