Fatima Masuma
Islamic history testifies that a number of women attained the highest spiritual ranks; this is clearly reflected both in historical sources and in the hadiths of the Infallibles. Among them, one can cite such great figures as Fatima Zahra, Khadija, and Zaynab. Continuing this chain, a special place is also held by Fatima Masuma — the daughter of Imam Musa al-Kazim and the sister of Imam Ali al-Rida.
Fatima Masuma, who passed away at a young age, lived in the second century of Islam. During a journey, she fell ill and died, and was buried in the city of Qom. Despite her short life, her spiritual status over the centuries has occupied an important place in Islamic enlightenment, and her name has been remembered alongside other pious women.
Today, her shrine in the city of Qom is known as a major place of pilgrimage. Thanks to her spiritual influence, the city of Qom has, since the second century of Islam, developed into a center of hadith scholarship and religious knowledge, and for more than the past century has functioned as a leading academic center. The continuity of the Qom Seminary is also closely connected with this spiritual heritage and authority.
According to the Islamic calendar, the first day of the month of Dhu al-Qi’dah (this year — April 19) is observed as the birthday of Fatima Masuma and holds special significance for preserving her memory.
