Ashura Day

The 10th day of the month of Muharram according to the Islamic lunar calendar is Ashura Day. Ashura Day is a day of mourning and sorrow. It is associated with tragic events. On this day of the 61st year of Hijra, Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was killed along with his relatives and companions in the Battle of Karbala (in Iraq).

Imam Hussein spoke out against the tyranny of the Umayyad Caliph Yazid and became a symbol of sacrifice for the sake of justice and truth.

In Muslim countries, mourning processions, merjis, theatrical performances are held on this day, and mersiyyas (lamentable poems) are read.

Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, the date of Ashura changes every year according to our calendar. This year, Ashura Day fell on July 6.
