Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Imam Hasan al-Askari

On the 8th of Rabi al-Awwal, 260 AH, one of the great figures of the Islamic world, the eleventh Imam of the school of Ahl al-Bayt, the noble Imam Hasan al-Askari, was martyred in the city of Samarra.

Imam Hasan ibn Ali al-Askari, the son of Imam Ali al-Hadi, was the eleventh Imam from the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet Muhammad. His kunya was Abu Muhammad, while his most renowned epithet was “al-Askari.” This epithet is associated with the military camp in the city of Samarra, known as the “Askari” district, where the Imam spent a significant part of his life.

Imam Hasan al-Askari lived during a period when the Abbasid authorities exercised strict surveillance over and exerted considerable pressure upon the Ahl al-Bayt. Following the martyrdom of his father, Imam Ali al-Hadi, he assumed the responsibility of the Imamate and served as Imam for approximately six years. Throughout this period, he remained under close surveillance by the Abbasid authorities.

According to authoritative sources, Imam Hasan al-Askari was martyred on 8 Rabi al-Awwal 260 AH in the city of Samarra. The sources also state that he was poisoned on the orders of the Abbasid caliph al-Mu’tamid. He was 28 years old at the time of his martyrdom. The 8th of Rabi al-Awwal is widely commemorated as the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hasan al-Askari.

One of the principal reasons for Imam Hasan al-Askari’s particular significance in Islamic history is that he was the father of Imam al-Mahdi. According to the doctrine of Twelver Shiism, Imam al-Mahdi was the son of Imam Hasan al-Askari and is regarded as the twelfth Imam.

During the lifetime of Imam Hasan al-Askari, the Abbasid authorities took a particular interest in the birth and identity of his son. Consequently, the Imam’s family and close associates were kept under strict surveillance. Historical sources also contain reports that, following the Imam’s martyrdom, the Abbasid authorities conducted searches in an attempt to identify and locate his son.

Following his martyrdom, Imam Hasan al-Askari was buried in the family residence in Samarra, beside the grave of his father, Imam Ali al-Hadi. In subsequent centuries, the site was expanded and developed into a major shrine and pilgrimage destination. Today, the Askariyya Shrine, where the graves of Imam Ali al-Hadi and Imam Hasan al-Askari are located, is regarded as one of the most important religious and historical sites in Samarra.
