The Martyrdom Anniversary of Imam Muhammad al-Taqi

Today, on the last day of the month of Dhu al-Qa‘dah (May 17), the martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Imam — Imam Muhammad al‑Taqi — is commemorated. He is also known as Imam al-Jawad and was born in 195 AH in the city of Medina. After the martyrdom of his father, the eighth Imam Imam al‑Ridha, he assumed the position of Imamate at a very young age.

Imam Muhammad al-Taqi was renowned for the depth of his knowledge, his generosity, and his elevated moral character. Despite his short life, he played a significant role in the dissemination of Islamic knowledge and intellectual tradition. During his time, he faced political pressure from the Abbasid caliphs — Al‑Ma’mun and later Al‑Mu’tasim.

According to historical sources, Imam Muhammad al-Taqi was poisoned and attained martyrdom in 220 AH in Baghdad at the age of only 25. It is reported that this act was carried out by his wife, the daughter of Caliph Al-Ma’mun. His blessed shrine is located today within the sacred precinct of Al‑Kazimiyya Shrine and remains one of the important pilgrimage sites for Muslims. On this day, commemorative gatherings are held throughout the Islamic world, particularly among Shia communities, where his scholarly and spiritual legacy is remembered.
